The non uniform quantizer in Mp3(ISO 11172 part 3, layer 3) compression
algorithm uses a power law. For each Huffman decoded frequency line `x', |x|4/3, (x
raised to the power 4/3) has to be calculated. This paper presents a novel method
to evaluate |x|4/3 which is suitable for FPGA or ASICs targeting minimum area,
minimum no of clock cycles, and maximum ease of design. The design method
exploits the fact that the range of input values, i.e the range of |x| is limited i.e it can
be 0 to 8191(or 8206, as it is at times interpreted) only. To get this paper send me
